Safe Passage

Our mission is to provide extreme "life" makeovers to abused women and their children within a three month span by offering restorative health and life skills services called Stepping Stones to a New Life Program; these services include: safe shelter, counseling, health skills guidance, corrective dental and plastic surgery to remove scars and damage due to abuse, job resources, their own residences, and follow up support.

Our Vision is: Restoring abused women and their children to new and healthier lives. Our Values are: Love, Compassion, and Generosity.

History: Trish Steele, founder of Safe Passage Home, drawing on her own experience as a victim of domestic violence, was dismayed by the lack of services in the L.A. area to bring about positive and healthy change to victims of domestic abuse. She and her husband Jim decided to provide emergency safe shelter and did so for 5 years in their own home. Since 1992, more than 1000 women and their children have come to Safe Passage looking for shelter and support. During 2001 - 2003, we oversaw our first transitional home in Sherman Oaks. The women and children made great strides in breaking the violent cycle of abuse and regaining a healthy lifestyle. We continue today in 2008 to see one success story after another, as women and children become healthy both physically and emotionally. Stepping Stones to a New Life Program begins with individual counseling from one of LA's finest therapists; then guidance in healthy living is done by certified professionals; dental surgeons provide corrective and oral health services; plastic surgeons correct physical damage caused by the abuse restoring health to the outer body, as Image consultants work to rebuild healthier image perspective to the inner person. Then job resources are provided and help given so that each woman will become self-sufficient. Independent living instruction is also given, as well as mentoring for the children, enabling the women and children to finally have their own residences. Safe Passage then continues with follow up services and group support by a staff of volunteers including the aforementioned professionals as well as others who provide help with education, child care, legal matters, and funding businesses.
